Fires in Brazil

ARD report on forest fires in Brazil

Large parts of the rainforest stand in the wetland Pantanal in Brazil
in flames. The region has been suffering from extreme drought for too long. The efforts of the fire brigade to get the fire under control seem almost hopeless. The reason for this is the austerity measures of the Bolsonaro government. The ARD broadcast world mirror shows the dramatic situation on site.

Extinguishing fires quickly and effectively is not the only important factor in preserving the rainforest. Burned areas must be reforested and must not be transferred to private ownership for arable farming for palm oil or soybeans. The actions of current Brazilian politics so far raise doubts as to whether the efforts for environmental protection and sustainability in the region are being sufficiently supported locally.
