The IBAMA (Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis) is a Brazilian authority that takes on tasks comparable to those of the German Federal Environment Agency. For large projects, it can issue or refuse environmental licenses. IBAMA's work is often in conflict with the interests of rainforest dwellers, landowners and mine operators.
